Museum night at Reykjavík City Museum February 5th from 19:00-24:00
Reykjavík City Museum offers a great selection of interesting events on Museum Night. Here below is a detailed program.
Árbær Open Air Museum
Head to Lækjargata House at 20:00 for a fascinating concert, where Hugi Jónsson (baritone) together with Kári Allansson (organist) and Pétur Húni Björnsson (singer and folklorist) both perform and inform the audience on traditional Icelandic song and poetry – covering everything from the settlement age to the present day.
Haunted walking tours of the museum are available at 19:00 and again at 21:00. Note! We recommend that those with small children attend the earlier tour since the later one might be too frightening for sensitive little souls. Rumour has it that a long-dead spirit follows the museum guide with every footstep and can suddenly appear when least expected! Note that the maximum of guests are 20 people and spoken language is Icelandic.
Be sure to attend the Hjáverkin exhibition in Kornhús on Museum Night where from 19:00 – 22:00 two fortune tellers will be on hand to read your destiny. Who can tell what good fortunes lie ahead?
The Settlement Exhibition
Have you ever wanted to dress up as a real Viking? Well, now’s your chance! We’ve a great collection of costumes for both adults and children to dress up in. You can also pose in front of our scenic backdrop and take some snapshots on your phone or camera. Don’t forget to share your pics using the #Reykjavik871 hashtag!
As a special treat from 19.00-21.00, Svanhildur María Gunnarsdóttir from the Árni Magnússon Institute will be inviting guests to explore the old tradition of quill writing on vellum using some of her own, self-blended vegetable inks. The texture of vellum might come as a surprise to the novice quill writer!
Reykjavík Maritime Museum
As a treat for Museum Night, guests are invited to attend a special screening of the classic film Jaws, which will be shown in the darkened Bryggjusalurinn of the Maritime Museum, from 19:00-24:00. During the show, you can munch on some fresh, crunchy popcorn too!
One of the exhibitions takes on a spookier tone as actress Elva Ósk scares the pants off guests with a few choice ghost stories at 19:00, 20:00 and 21:00. Note! Due to the particularly chilling content of the second two stories, we recommend that those with children attend the first reading only.
In Hornsílinu, the film Dark Light by Ryan Wood will be shown, featuring some magnificent northern-lights footage captured over a two-month period in Iceland. With some craft and mask-making activities on offer too, families can look forward to spending a cosy evening together.
Coast guard vessel Óðinn
Aboard the ship, old crew members will be on hand to amuse guests with stories of their adventures past and present, and life on the big blue sea. A number of Icelandic, ocean-themed films will be shown in the dining hall, including Brim (Undercurrent) Djúpið (The Deep) and Nýtt líf (New Life). The featured films will be on from 19:00 – 23:00. Popcorn, Pepsi and a cosy atmosphere will also be provided!
Reykjavík Museum of Photography
Filmmaker Þorgeir Guðmundsson talks about the Friðgeir Helgason Moods exhibition at the Reykjavík Museum of Photography. The guided tour commences at 20.00 with a documentary about Friðgeir, who has lived a very colourful and interesting life: one which is very much reflected in his images. As part of the exhibition some excerpts of the film will also be shown.
The band, Hráefni, will perform at 21 and 22. Don’t miss out on their feel good music!
We recommend a visit at all the floors at Grófarhús, there is something to see on every floor.
