Reykjavík City Museum participates in International Museum Day on May 18th 2017, offering free admission to five interesting events:

Viking Animals – the secret of the settlement

On May 18th , International Museum Day, the Reykjavík City Museum is proud to present the exhibition Viking Animals – the secret of the settlement.

The arctic fox was the only land mammal living in Iceland when the first settlers from northern Europe arrived. The settlers had to bring all their animals with them in order to survive. These animals dramatically changed the landscape and environment into the country we know today. The exhibition author Dr. Lara Hogg will greet guest and tell them about this fascinating subject at 5 pm. Spoken language is English.

Free entrance from 17:00 - 18:00.

Expert talk on the selection and conservation of exhibition pieces

Experts from the Árbær Open Air Museum welcome guests to the museum's maritime preservation facilities for a special presentation on the selection of artefacts to feature in new exhibition at the Reykjavík Maritime Museum, set to open in mid 2018. In preparation for this exhibition, which is of considerable size, the staff members from the Reykjavík City Museum are currently busy cleaning and restoring the artefacts that guests will be shown. This is a great opportunity to learn all about how historic artefacts are selected for exhibitions and meet and talk to museum experts. Guests should meet at the ticket desk at 12:15. Spoken language is Icelandic.

Guided tour of the Varðan preservation facilities

To mark the occasion of International Museum Day, which is celebrated on 18th May in museums around the world, there will be a guided tour around the newly built preservation facilities at Árbær Open Air Museum called Varðan. Gerður Róbertsdóttir, who's in charge of conservation of historical artefacts, will guide the tour and offer information and ideas on the various preservation techniques used in museums. Guided tours of the premises are free and open to the public; however, registration is required as there are only 12 places available. To register please send an email to agusta.ros.arnadottir@reykjavik.is. The meeting point for the tour is at the Árbær Open Air Museum sales desk at 12:00 noon. Spoken language is Icelandic.

Slavery in the Age of Settlement - guided tour

To mark the occasion of Museum Day, which is celebrated on 18th May in museums around the world, a special guided tour of the Settlement Exhibition will be offered at lunchtime on the subject of slavery during the Age of Settlement, which was both allowed and commonplace at that time in Iceland. The guided tour, which is led by Jón Páll Björnsson, Reykjavík City Museum education specialist, is free and open to the public. Spoken language is Icelandic.

Guided tour of the Óðinn Coast Guard Vessel

In celebration of International Museum Day, which is held on 18th May in museums around the world, the museum will be offering a free guided tour of the Óðinn Coast Guard Vessel with one of the museum specialists who will be regaling guests with stories about life on board which was both pleasant and at times difficult and scary. The meeting point for this tour is in the museum lobby at 12:00 noon. Note! The tour is only available in Icelandic.
